Panasonic Toughbook harddrive cage is interesting

by on Jun.30, 2009, under Hardware

Ever wonder what the inside of a fully-ruggedized Panasonic Toughbook 30 looks like? What keeps the harddrive so well protected?

If you have access to one of these, you’ve probably taken a look yourself, but I figure that most of us have not. My boss has one and I replaced his HDD with an OCZ Vertex SSD today. I thought I’d take a few pics while I was at it so you could see what is going on in there.

The harddrive cage comes out of the right side of the unit, shown below:

Here is the entire cage:

A different angle:

With the top removed from the cage, showing a lot of the foam cushioning:

The HDD unit removed from the cage but still encased in plastic and foam:

A closeup of the foam blocks:

Partially unwrapped, starting to see the actual HDD beneath all the coverings:

Outer plastic case removed, just another layer of plastic and metal around the drive left:

The mess of all the parts, HDD finally liberated. Most of this stuff was attached with tape or other adhesives, so it was fun to try to keep it nice and neat:

The SSD, all wrapped back up in the (now unnecessary) padding:

At least it is now a whole lot faster than the old 5400RPM drive that it replaced. Boss = happy.

Thanks, Seagate support chat

by on May.28, 2009, under Whining

A 2-week-old 1.5TB Seagate drive started vomiting S.M.A.R.T. errors, so I tried to RMA it this morning. Usually this process works pretty well… but not today. Silly me for thinking the Live Chat could help me.

Chat Transcript:
Hello. How may I help you?
Seagate Rep: Good morning
Seagate Rep: how can I help you?

Me: good morning
Me: trying to RMA a drive and having some problems
Me: i’m fairly certain I have an account on here
Me: I just RMA’ed a drive a few weeks ago
Me: but it has no record of my account
Me: so I tried to RMA as a guest
Me: but it keeps telling me that my city, state, and zip code do not match
Me: so I can’t get any further
Seagate Rep: you may chose the guest user option.
Me: that’s what I did
Seagate Rep: it will work until you figure out what is wrong with your account.
Seagate Rep: did that work or not?

Me: when I put in my address, it says that my city state and zip do not match
Me: I tried my work address and my home address
Me: it says that neither of them match
Me: but I’m certain they do, as you would assume
Seagate Rep: then check what the mistake was.
Seagate Rep: because if you went through the first stage then you’re on the right track.

Me: there is no mistake
Me: I’m at the shipping/billing stage
Me: I enter in my address and other info and hit submit
Me: it says the city state zip do not match
Me: I check them
Me: they do match, I’m certain. … this is our address
Me: I give up and try my home address instead…I’m certain this one is correct, too
Me: it tells me that the city state zip do not match again
Me: but I’m certain they do
Me: there is some address verification script that is not working
Seagate Rep: you will have to call for assistance.

Thanks so much. Now I can look forward to spending an hour on the phone.
